I wrote this song after I sat down to read what I thought was going to be a familiar story—the Christmas story. But when I turned the pages, I was shocked. The account I read that day disturbed me. Yet, at the same time, it filled me with hope. And so I sat down to write this song about Christmas, about hope in the midst of tragedy. It’s about the Incarnation, the creative Logos, the Holy Innocents, the Fall, the Angel of Death, and Blood Covenant.
It’s called “Bethlehem” and it’s the opening track to the “Think Out Loud: Music Serving the Homeless” CD. You can learn about this collaborative effort to help those in need through music by checking out the Think Twin Cities website. Charlie Parr and Ashleigh Still joined me for some amazing accompaniment on this track.
